Chiswick House
“We worked with Rider Stirland through RIBA Stages 1–4 on the renovation of our home, and the experience exceeded our expectations. From the outset, Alex was attentive to our brief and highly responsive, showing great flexibility in adapting designs as our feedback evolved.
The final design has completely transformed our house, creating a beautiful, light-filled home that we are absolutely thrilled with. Throughout the build phase, Alex was always on hand to help resolve any issues quickly and effectively, providing thoughtful solutions that kept the project moving smoothly.
We would not hesitate to recommend Rider Stirland to anyone looking for an architect who combines creativity, professionalism, and genuine care for their clients.”
Anouska & Nick - Client Testimonial
Project Brief
Our clients wanted to create additional living spaces that felt both connected and adaptable - a place for family life to unfold, with improved flow and a greater sense of openness. They also sought to make better use of the existing footprint and introduce a calm, contemporary layer to their Victorian home.
Design Solution
Our approach was to extend the existing cellar and ground floor to the house. A single-storey rear addition and larger basement level, work with the proportions and character of the existing building.
At ground floor, the layout has been reconfigured to improve circulation and visual connections between spaces. On entry you gain a view to the staircase and through a tall arched opening all the way to the landscaped rear garden allowing natural light through to the spacious hallway. A smaller arched opening leads from the kitchen to a walk-in pantry - providing great storage and additional work surface.
The tall rear extension accommodates a generous family living and kitchen area. A generous glazed corner allows access onto the garden and coupled with a large oriel window the spaces are flooded with natural light. The basement houses the services and a large utility room to free up more space on the upper levels for living.
From the hall a traditionally styled staircase weaves it way through the house connecting each level with a seamless oak handrail. Each level has been re-organised to allow each bedroom ample living space and storage. The principal bedroom suite occupies the top floor making the most of the light and views and generous head height. Seamless joinery gives plenty of storage and leads to a spacious ensuite with a naturally lit walk-in shower and a bath centred within the glazed gable.
Externally, the design takes cues from the materials of the original Victorian house. Traditional London stock brickwork laid in Flemish bond is paired with vertical brick detailing and black metal cappings, bringing a refined contemporary touch.
The result is a scheme that enhances both the function and character of the house creating a series of thoughtful spaces that our client can enjoy and love living in.
