Berkeley Cottage - Exciting Site Progress!

The Site

A unique project, located in the heart of Bosham Conservation Area, close to the South Downs National Park.

The site is recognised as a local historic building and enjoys shoreline views over tidal salt marshes, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The Brief

The brief provides a number of exciting challenges: structural stability, protecting historical heritage, and improved sustainability all whilst incorporating a wish for contemporary family living.

Construction

The project is ongoing and has been split into four phases.

PHASE ONE:

After researching and testing local geology and site ground conditions, the first phase was to remove the ground floor, excavate and install 22, 12-meter-deep piles and add a reinforced concrete slab over. Together these changes enabled us to re-support the existing historical building above.

PHASE TWO:

Phase two analysed the existing fabric of the building to carry out above ground structural repairs. This included installing high grade steel ties between masonry walls and restraint strapping to floors and roofs.

PHASE THREE:

Once structurally sound phase 3 commenced. The focus for this stage was to research and develop designs for a high performing, breathable building fabric. Conscious of our clients’ desire for a sustainable building, we achieved this through a breathable lime plaster and a combination of both wood fibre and sheep’s wool insulation.

PHASE FOUR:

Finally, the historic building can breathe and is fully insulated! From here we have moved into phase four, the design and construction of a sensitive addition to the house. More on phase 4 to follow!!
